Qualified college or university graduates gain direct admission into year two (semester three) of this three-year program and receive their technologist diploma in two years (four semesters).

You will learn scientific principles, techniques and skills to work in industrial microbiology. Specialized study is also included in biotechnology applications, biochemistry, microbial genetics, clinical and environmental microbiology.

Theory and technical practice are combined with many opportunities to enhance experience. Also, project work, in consultation with faculty, helps you develop skills in research, laboratory techniques, report writing and presentation.

You will learn to:

  • Isolate, enumerate and identify microorganisms from many types of samples (water, soil, air, your body, food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic products)
  • Perfect your aseptic techniques
  • Accurately calibrate and use a range of instruments such as pH and BOD meters, Gas Chromatographs, spectrophotometers (regular/IR/UV), HPLC’s, centrifuges, PCR thermocyclers and Gel electrophoresis equipment
  • Prepare microbiological media and reagents and culture pathogenic microbes
  • Design and perform advanced microbiology and microbial genetics experiments
  • Use microorganisms to assay pharmaceutical products

Discover the powerful and amazing world most people will never see. Centennial’s nationally accredited Biotechnology Technician/Technologist programs provide a thorough understanding of microbiology and related sciences, as well as technical skills used in industrial laboratory work. You’ll gain lab experience with COD meters and gas chromatographs, autoclaves, incubators, fermentation units and gel electrophoresis equipment. Train for the commercial food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical fields using independent projects. Focus on laboratory techniques, including appropriate safety procedures. Continue into the third year technology program and specialize in topics such as advanced biotechnology, systematic microbiology and microbial genetics.
